The notation YUV, and the term luminance, are widespread in digital video. However, digital video almost never uses Y'UV color difference components, and never directly represents the luminance of color science. The common terms are almost always wrong. In this "white paper" that I wrote for Discreet Logic, I explain the R'G'B' and Y'CBCR 4:2:2 representations, and explain the technical aspects of conversion between the two. I conclude by suggesting steps that can be taken during production and post-production to avoid difficulty with the conversion.
On February 6, I presented a paper, Luminance, luma, and the migration to DTV, at the 32nd SMPTE Advanced Motion Imaging Conference in Toronto. For now, just the abstract is available. This article describes the theory of color reproduction in video, and some of the engineering compromises necessary to make practical cameras and practical coding systems. I presented this paper at the SMPTE Advanced Television and Electronic Imaging Conference, San Francisco, Feb. 1995.
